Yoga Therapy Certification: Teaching Seniors
The population of seniors looking to do yoga has grown significantly over the past few years. There are senior’s classes in most studios as well as assisted living homes. The challenge to a yoga teacher is that seniors come in all shapes, sizes and abilities. We will focus on a few stages of life, remembering that these stages can happen at all different ages. So, we are not directly tying the information into a specific age groups, this course is also not limited to advanced age.
This course is designed for yoga teachers who have completed a 200 hour certification or are enrolled in the Pose by Pose Yoga teacher training programs. This course will focus on teaching students of advanced age as well as limited mobility.
The course will be divided into three sections as follows:
- Mobile Seniors
- Limited Mobility
- Chair Bound and End of Life
The non-contact hours will consist of readings to do prior to the course and during the course, and there will be a project to complete in between the classes.
Though this course does not guarantee employment, it is a wonderful addition to your training skills for your current students, future students, someone you may know or even for your own practice as you age or find yourself with limited mobility from time to time.
Each class will focus on teaching you the best way to deliver the benefits of yoga (asana and pranayama) appropriate to the student’s ability and comfort level. We will emphasis how to create a non-competitive environment, and a space where the student is comfortable to make you aware of their limitations.
The actual structure of the classes may vary based on the student base, but a gentle class focused on increasing mobility, functionality as well as becoming comfortable in a yoga class is the main focus.
Attendance
You may attend one or all of the courses, and your certificate will reflect the courses you successfully completed. Each course will have a detailed syllabus offering both contact and non-contact hours.
Each course will consist of 8 contact hours and 2 non-contact hours.
